No, please do not use toothpaste. The toothpaste has abrasive material which will polish your coins surface where polish means scratch it. Hence you are basically polishing away the oxidation. On silver simply use lemon acid and neutralize it afterwards. Then use clear wax on the coin - like used in tea lights - to preserve it from further oxidation in teh future.

Regards

Of course do not use it on valuable coin's ,,But coin's you might just want to display that are only worth maybe a buck ,,,rule of thumb for most is  do not clean at all ,,I have cleaned maybe 4 coin's with toothpaste but the date's were only 56 ,,57, etc no real value to worry about and for personel display in a holder ,,,

To much work I find 100 or 200 silver coins a day I would spend all my time cleaning. But back to the real world. I use a silver polishing cloth that works very well you can get one at Wal mart for about 5 bucks I cut it in half and one half will polish 100's of coins and rings.

So, basically anything with a low but effective acidic level would do the trick.  Though as mentioned do not clean or attempt to revive an old coin.  It brings down the value.

Hi Tyler, I think your idea of using an eraser is a good one.
You have to be careful if the coin is a key date ( collectable ) coin though.
The soft eraser rubber shouldn't damage a coin by itself, but if a piece of grit is
release by rubbing, it could be rubbed into the face of the coin, __ and possibly scratch it. Tongue
