Go Up Go Down

Hi,
I found a large cent penny on one of my many outings and it has a hard layer of corrosion on both sides, I know it is worn badly as the edges are round, but I can see some stars and a outline of a head under this layer.
I've tried the peroxide method, the distilled water and  although they seem do a very tiny bit of removal they don't seem to soften this layer. Any Ideas? I think there isn't much use or value for it this way, except for the thrill of pulling it out of the earth!
Thanks for any successful ideas in advance!
HH
Roger

Toolboxdiver,
No I haven't! I have read alot about it and I am not sure how to do it for coins, I was just reading to make a copper basket out of stripped copper wire. Not sure what to power it with? a computer power supply? I have a large snap on battery charger that has setting from 6v low, medium, high, 12v low medium, hight and boost.
what do you recommend? then I read use salt, baking soda, and I also have acedic acid?
thanks,
Roger

"Crusties" are tough! (no pun intended) :-) You can soak them in olive oil if you don't mind waiting around for 4-6 months. You would need a pretty good-sized ultrasound cleaner and you would run the risk of ruining the coin while trying to break up the encrustments. Risky and expensive!  Electrolysis would seem to be the best choice even though some people freak out at the mention of it! It's relatively cheap to set-up. All you need is an AC/DC converter,(about $20 at Radio Shack), some alligator clips ($3), distilled water($1 a gallon), and some soda ash which is Sodium Carbonate. It's a ph adjuster for pool and spa water,($3 at your local pool/spa center). You can get directions on how to set it up on Google, and for about $30 you're ready to zap away!! Some folks like crusties because no one knows what's inside----like a RARE coin! I find the chances of that happening are RARE! Usually coins that are crappy on the outside are crappy on the inside too. I've got some good beginner coins to sell. Just IM me if your interested. At any rate good luck w/ the crusties!

I found this on another forum...Smiley...Hope it helps out

The problem with this method is that it can turn metal a pinkish colour..and if you leave it to long it will eat into the metal.

yes it can eat the metal if left too long but it does remove the years of crud if done right.

It's a good option as long as it's done the right way and you're careful.

You might wanna check it's value before you start cleaning it. Some of those large cents are worth a lot of $$, and even corroded might bring a few hundred if it's the right year/etc.
