Go Up Go Down

Hi everybody.
this is a problem i have  but  I am sure you all come across.perhaps one of you have the solution for the rest of us.
my finds  especially the copper, copper/bronze and copper/silver alloy are dying. disappearing
they turn green in spots then they become all green, covered of green powder and if you touch them they disintegrate.
the problem is more intense in coins that come out of salty water.
I do clean all my coins to the best I can, catalog them and then keep then in a boxes.
if just one of the coins gets this green cancer on it then it spreads to all of them.
I am sure you know what I am talking about.please let me know or let the forum know if you have a solution.
I will post some photos as soon as I make some
Kind regards
Nickel

All I can tell you is that we have a problem much like that with pyrite fossils here. What I do with them is after cleaning I coat them with a good paste wax like Johnson and Johnson floor wax then store them in air proof zip lock bags

I recently cleaned some clad pennies with CLR.That "Stuff" must be some wicked stuff. All coins cleaned up good and as they
started to drie the so called cancer set in.Any coin that had a ding in it that was the point of attack and it spread quickly.
Just as stated my coins started to degrade and disappear.Of course Iam one of those guys if a little does good then a lot
has to be better so you guesed it,I used it full strength and if that wasn"t enough I put them in the tumbler for a good half
hour just to see if I could make them disappear completely.LOL
That being said I do not recommend CLR at least not full strenght anyway, unless you are putting on a magic show
and you want t make the coins diappear right in front of your eyes. Shocked

LOL    CLR contains Hydrochloric Acid.    BAD MOVE!   You would need to boil them in Baking soda and water to neutralize the acid after cleaning.   Shocked

You can try a mixture of Hydrogen Peroxide and Lemon juice.  Start with 25% Hydrogen Peroxide and 75% Lemon juice and increase the ratio of hydrogen peroxide if necessary.   Not sure if this will work with copper/silver alloy coins and for sure you would want to do them separately from the alloys.

Also make sure that the coins are not stacked on top of each other.  You'll probably need to turn them over occassionally.    Follow up with a good rinse in distilled water and dry.
