Because some of them coins change color when you clean them I can not count the times I had to explain to the store keeper that they were real and not fake.

Seems to me if someone was going through all the trouble to make fake ones they would look a lot better than our dirty old park coins.

Yes they are.
Back to the coin cleaning.
You can try real lemon juice instead of vinegar.
It’s a stronger acid and works faster. Make sure you don’t mix copper with nickel

The fact that the middle layer of clad coinage is copper alloy makes everything have a copper cast after cleaning. Spend 'em!

I have cleaned thousands of coins with the vinegar/salt solution in a rock tumbler. If you separate the pennies, and I mean ALL pennies, from the nickels, dimes and quarters, you will NOT have a problem with the pennies causing the others of having the pinkish tint. You MUST tumble them separately!! After you tumble the coins do a real good rinse with clean tap water to keep the coins from 'clouding over'. You will know what I mean if you don't. The pic is a few of the coins that I have cleanse with the vinegar/salt solution. None have that 'pink' tint.

I think I will try that to see how it works. I looked it up and lemon juice is 5% to 6% acidic and vinegar is approximately 5%.  Also, it said lemons are native to Asia and that they are an evergreen.  Thousands of orange and lemon groves here in the valley, and never knew that. Makes me wonder what else they never told me.

James, I have only cleaned a little over two hundred, but I am seeing the same results. A word of advice on clad pennies though. It will eat through copper faster than it does nickel. I lost one penny that I accidently left in the solution for two hours. The back side was gone and the front side was eaten away on the edges. The back was blackened and the design was gone. I suppose if you clean a lot of clad coins you probably should not be throwing the solution down the drain. The nickel will enter into the solution and turning it blue. This is nickel chloride and sodium acetate now. Dispose of it properly. Don't store it next to the mouth wash. Shocked  No no!

Well I tried the lemon juice solution, and the results were not better than the vinegar solution. It also tended to leave a cloudy film which was not easy to remove. On the other side, it smelled much nicer and appeared to be safer to dispose of. Here are the total coins I have cleaned so far. 1st pix is the cleaned coins, 2nd is a pile of pennies yet to clean, and 3rd is a pile of pennies that are too corroded to mess with . Haven't decided what to do with them yet.

That's what I use.  Works great.  Never had any problem with them at the bank.

Thanks for that input Homie and Arfie. I will remember those options if I give up on this vinegar/salt solution. I think I have discovered what causes the cloudy film on the nickel plated coins. It looks like it might be citric acid crystallization. And the good news is that anhydrous ethanol will dissolve it. Don't worry that stuff is safe cause it's in beer and wine and all booze.  Rubbing or wood alcohol are not the same type of alcohol. That may sound sacrilegious to some of you if I use it to clean my coins, but I am a non-drinker and I won't need much to clean the coins. 1 can should last awhile. If it was the last can on earth I would save it for you all.

Ok, If anyone is still interested in this topic, I just want to state that I have changed my cleaning techniques a bit. Partly because I have obtained a double drum tumbler. Here is how I do it.

step 1. wash all coins with soap and water in a shaker bottle. Shake for 2 to 5 minutes or put on tumbler for 10 minutes
step 2. brush all coins with a brass cleaning brush to remove as much oxide as possible.
step 3. put all coins (only like types) in the tumbler drum and fill half way with white distilled vinegar and a pinch of salt.
step 4. tumble for 1 to 3 hours or until all oxide is removed. Less for zinc pennies. Do not put pennies in that have nicks, cuts or rough surfaces. All the coins will turn black.
step 5. brush cleaned coins with a brass cleaning brush till shiny.

I know the brush sounds drastic, but the copper and nickel are tougher. Try it you will see. The coins come out like new.
