Go Up Go Down

Over the time I have embarked on some preservation work with medals and badges..... The following is some of the work I have done.

This first one is a badge that I found while detecting. The badge is supposed to have a gold plating on it....

{alt}

After the cleaning process using electrolysis, I then used a thin coating of a gold spray paint, and then placed a background behind it. The red background is also the original color that was used.

{alt}

The finished badge.

The next collection is buckles that I have found over a time while detecting.... All the buckles have been cleaned using different methods including electrolysis and vinegar,,,, All the buckles were then fastened to the frame using a thin wire.

{alt}

I was also asked by a friend if I could place his fathers medals into a frame.... The medals when I received them were a total mess, with ribbons dirty and some torn, and most placed onto the wrong medals.... Each of the medals were stripped down and each ribbon was washed and the medal was cleaned and sprayed with a clear lacquer.

{alt}

Medals before the work was done.

{alt}

The finished results.

The next two frames are my badges. The first frame being my Rhodesian badges, and the next frame the South African Badges.

{alt}

Rhodesian Badges.

{alt}

South African badges, some from the 2nd world war...

Hope that you enjoy my post.

Hi Karl, yes I use the white vinegar as a mild acid wash..... sometimes lemon juice..... I also use electrolysis for rusty steel items, I use An electrolysis plate which is an aluminium plate with soap powder and water.... this is for silver items.... And for everyday stubborn dirt I use hot water with ammonia... But that gets up your nose..... If you look on my web page, in the forum under preservation you will see my electrolysis plate.... And under the video gallery I have a video on electrolysis that I use.... a very compact unit.... Oh and of course the soft wire brushes and tooth brushes are a must along with a tooth pick or two  Great

Hope that helps... ?
