My wife is a photographer and you know the old adage about the cobblers kids going bare foot.
I will get a picture and post it by this weekend.

Now, that's what I needed to know, Home fire.
THanks.

Right now I have a coin that is identifiable.
If I boil it for 4 hours will I still have that?

Assuming you have enough water to keep it from boiling dry (it will be a long way below the melting point of the coin, so you're basically avoiding adding any dissolved impurities back on to the coin if all the water boils away).    But you shouldn't have to boil it for 4 hours.

Boil the Coin in Distilled water for a few hours In a cloth basket to keep all sides the same.    Dump out the Water and do Again.  Two Hours.  That will   Pull out any Sulfides and Salts

Thank you for the tip homie. Many of my copper coins turn to green dust. They are coins I found on the beach or in the seawater.
I will give the boiling method a go see it that will help

Hi Xavier:
As promised here are some pictures of the Massachusetts coin.
It's in rough shape.  THe date is not even raised as a matter of fact the date is actually indented.
Looking at the condition of the coin  I  think you can see why I was reluctant to "clean" it.
I think the patina is all I have to give me an idea as to what the coin is.
Using a jewelers loop the detail can be seen.
You have to go to "attached" to get the pics.

OK well now we can see your problem, your coin is covered with copper sulphate and that is why you say that it has lost some of it's detail

Posted on: May 30, 2013, 09:47:34 PM
I had another look at your coin and it looks to me as if the coin was made by indentation rather than the raised date and face. I'm not going to give you any advice on this one because I'm not qualified for it but Google the coin to see what it should look like, this will give you a better idea as to what you should do.

You can use the reverse electrolysis machine described on this forum to arrest the further decay of your coin. Then, despite the obvious concern for damage, use some clear polyurethane varnish and coat it with two coats of that wonderful stuff. Yes, it does change the coin from it's present condition but since it can be removed chemically without altering the coin, it is acceptable for the long term preservation of corrosible metals. It's used all the time by museums to preserve items removed from salt water. Once the corrosion is arrested, they lather it on.

Hi Homefire:
I need some help.
I keep getting notices that I have a reply to a subject but when I go to the site I scroll all the way to the bottom and there is no new message.
I have checked to see if there is a page 2 and the is not.
How do I get to the new "replies"?

Just go to the upper left corner and click on   " New Replies to your Posts"

You should find them in there.

Hello again, Homefire:
I just got a notice that I have a message pertaining to this topic and I went to this site.
Your'e message dated 5/29 is the last message I have seen.
I have gotten notices on 5/30 and 5/31 about new messages but I can't find them
THere is no page 2 so where do I go to find them?
 A suggestion:
Instead of replying to this site please reply to bowbender2@earthlink.net.
That way I know I will get your thoughts.
THanks

Most folks don't have time to do Personal Responses.  If you received a E-mail there is a Response posted some place.

It will be within the Area I told you about.    Maybe you need to Go to the Second Page?
