protect old coin

I was fortunate enough to find a 1778 Massachusetts minted coin (copper) about the size of a large penny.
One side was in rough shape but the obverse was in good condition
When I first found it I could make out details and put it into a coin protector which is two pieces of cardboard with a hole in it and plastic over the holes thus sandwiching the coin .
All I did to prepare the find was to wash it in water, dabbed it dry then placed it between the two pieces of cardboard/plastic.
Looking at the coin recently it seems that the detail isn't as good as the day I found it. Could be old age and poor eye sight .
I just want to make sure I am doing all I can to preserve the find as best as possible.
Any suggestions???

The copper should not degrade itself it could go green but the details should not fade away. I found an old (To our standards) 1942 South African coin it also happens to be red copper. The coin looked terrible when I found it so I gave it a good clean then kept it in my pocket for a month, now the tarnish has come back and it looks the way that I thin it should. I would not have done it this way with a coin of value, here is a before and after photo

Salt is a Coins Enemy. Baking soda is a Salt of Calcium Yes Calcium is a Metal, Calcium and Peroxide cleans them most well. Just be sure to soak and clean again with Distilled Water.

I was more interested in making sure that the coin didn't degenerate as it sat in the protector.
I heard that exposure to air, after being buried for some time will cause oxidation and the coin will degenerate.

Yes oxidation will degrade your coin but in your case there is non so nothing to worry about, and I know exactly what you mean about the eye sight going to the roses :'( sad really sad

LOL I guess you do have a point but I'd be willing to give just about anything to have my good young man vision back and perhaps some day they will be able to do just that with DNA boy am I going off topic. I just realized that you did not post a photo of your coin so how about it?

Ok! Now I under stand.
Here is What I would Do if That was a Problem that Concerned me. Boil the Coin in Distilled water for a few hours In a cloth basket to keep all sides the same. Dump out the Water and do Again. Two Hours. That will Pull out any Sulfides and Salts it already had going on the surface..
This was nothing you did but the Ground it was found in.
After Drying under a Lamp, Using White Cotton Gloves place it in one of these.
Low Sulfur there quite good.
