A person in Germany we know will take the rust off by mechanical or chemical means. Then he will paint the item with black water color, and finally put the item in hot wax.
With small items he will remove the rust and use a candle to get the wax on. The smoke from the candle turns the iron a neat old looking, black color and the wax preserves the item.
I really like the candle method for small iron things. I found a couple small relics a few days ago that I will wax. It is important Not to first remove all the rust down to a shiny metal before applying the smoky wax coating.
I will try Christian's method
