Can anyone tell me how to prevent rust from continually "flaking"?..........HH....Johnnn

GoldDigger1950:
Archaeological conservationists use reverse electrolysis to stabilize the rust and then dip it or spray it in varnish. Varnish is very hard to find these days and shellac is a poor substitute. I'd recommend polyurethane instead but that tends to blister and peel over time. In the resources section of this site there is an article on reverse electrolysis and how to build a setup to do it on a small scale.

GoldDigger1950:
Here's the DIY project I was telling you about. Reverse the leads and us a huge chunk of iron as the anode. The rust will begin to deoxidize and when it does, it will weld into a relatively rust free cake of iron. Try it first with something not critical to your collection and see how it works.

Oops. Nearly forgot the URL.

Chemical reducers won't make the flakes stable. They just make them fall apart. But the rust will be gone. Thay're good for surface corrosion.
