Wolfy, it would help if you said what you were planning on using it for.  You'll need a different type/size of medium for items with delicate detail than you will for other items.   (also, if you use the search function, you may find some of your questions have already been answered since there has been a lot of discussion about tumbling in the last 2 or 3 months)

Wolfy, I use fish tank gravel, and a little bit of liquid soap with water just covering the coins, also do the pennies by themselves as the pennies will discolor the dimes, nickels, quarters, halves, and dollar coins. GH, ca-don

Wolfy,

I use a Loritone 3 barrel (1lb) tumbler, which I bought strait from the company. I priced used units on ebay and amazon, but for a few dollars more ($10) I got a brand new one with warrenty and it has been awesome.

Hey Chief I have several Loritone  tumblers they are the best and being I am big into lapidary they get a work out around here. As for coins I picked up a brass vibrating cleaner at a sporting goods store last year. Add a little gravel fish tank gravel works pretty good. If your want your money real clean redo them with some walnut shells they get pretty.

Wolfy,

Kellyco sells gravel and the powder used to help clean coins and treasures and the tumbler works great. Never tried fish gravel but it seems feasable. The powder Kellyco sells is expensive and I thought it was just baking soda, its not, when I tried using Baking soada in place of there powder it expands and the barrels will continue to leak due to the chemical gas that is caused. I havnt found a equal replacement.
