Arizona Treasures Unlimited Members Only Holiday Hunt

(1/1)

BitburgAggie_7377:
ATU had their annual members only "Holiday Hunt" today in Glendale, Arizona.   We had a pretty decent turn-out with several members bringing along family for the post hunt festivities.   Except for some IKE dollars, some nickels, and some indianhead pennies, the ATU Holiday Hunt is all silver and prize tokens.   Included in the silver were 35 dollars (Morgan and Peace).    There were also 200 prize tokens planted of which 10 were not found during the one hour hunt and had to wait for the clean up crew.

I'm not sure how Dusty Carl did, except that he had a handful of coins.   As for me, I came up with 3 Peace dollars, 3 Ikes, 1 Franklin half, 6 quarters, 2 Rosies, and an Indianhead as well as 3 prize tokens.   I traded my top token in for a copy of a token book I've had my eye on for several years (New Mexico Trade Tokens II).....and then I had the author sign the book for me.    The number 1 token was found by a guy who has been hunting for about 3 years.  Of all the prizes available to him, he decided to walk away with the gold coin (imagine that).

Well BA did quite well I must say. My take wasn't as much but none too shabby. I found 2 Franklin half dollars, 6 silver quarters, 5 Roosevelt and 2 mercury dimes, 3 buffalo nickels,  and 3 V nickels.( oldest 1893). I found one token with which I traded in for a 2 person tent that I really needed, plus I purchased a second token from a fellow that had found a fistful and traded that for a 5" factory coil for my BH which would have cost me much more if I had purchased it from eBay. What can I say.....I HAD FUN!. THAT'S WHAT!!!!! :D :-*. The weather was cool and windy in the AM, but warmed up by 9:30. A swell bunch of people showed up and a good time was had by all, especially the little boy whose dad gave him a bunch of tokens and he picked out a Radio Shack detector so he could hunt with his dad. They start learning when their babies.

I haven't received the official count yet.   We had several members who paid previously but weren't able to participate, so I figure somewhere between 35 and 40.    The guy with the highest combined total of coins and tokens recovered 124 targets in an hour.  He has been detecting since he was knee-high to a pup.   My own totals were much closer to the average, and better than in the past,  which means I am getting better with this detector and with my strategy (or possibly my luck).   The hunt was followed up with a pot-luck lunch and a raffle.  Then some of the members, including Carl, went back out to recover the few coins and tokens we hadn't found.......We don't like leaving a lot in the ground because we don't want folks tempted to hunt that field without permission from the owners.

It sounds like you club members from Arizona had a great time with your hunt.  Congrats for all your finds.

I've never been to a hunt.  I've been detecting for  40+ years but no clubs anywhere near and I never felt like driving the distances I would have to go to participate in one.  I would rather stay in the home area and hunt on my own!

But the hunts always sound like fun!
