Most of the stories we hear today about Cocos island are legends. But in some legends there is a grain of truth. Knowing what is fact and what is fiction in a complex history of Cocos is no easy task. Anyone who is really interested in the story, should start thier search for the facts before the era of the 20th century treasure authors. They saw the story as a chance to make a quick buck.
If you research long enough you will be suprised to discover how much authors have added and changed to the story with each retelling of the story.

The history of Cocos is very long and complex. Here is some thing that might spark some interest.
August Gissler was the most ardent and obsessive treasure seeker who spent about 17 years on Cocos Island. Some have claimed he found 33 coins during his long stay on the Island.
It is interesting to note that the date of the coins Gissler gave was 1773 to 1799. It is clear that the coins are not from Edward Davis, Swan, Wafer and Dampier?s activities of 1684-1701. Nor are they from Clipperton?s 1718-1722 Expeditions.
Could the answer be written on the rocks of Chatham and wafer bays? There is carved onto a rock the words ?His Brit. Maj. Schr. Les Deux Amis ? 1797?. Could this vessel have been the source of some of the coins that Gissler found?
It appears from some sources that there was a French vessel called ?Deux Amis? Captured by a British vessel called the Speedy off Lisbon Portugal. The ?Deux Amis? was later crewed by English seamen and captained by H Downman in 1798. It was said she had a letter of marque, armed with 4 guns and 27 men. This was during England?s war with France and Spain 1797- 1803. There was a temporary treaty that lasted 1803-1804 before war broke out again 1805-1807. Did this ship and English crew sail on cruise off the South American Coast looking for Spanish ships? The fate of this vessel is a mystery in itself?
But due to the alleged date range of the coins, the origin of these coins must have come from a much later date. So the only event the coins could be possibly connected to is the South American war of independence 1815-1825? And perhaps this is some evidence of treasure being buried on the island on that time frame?
And of course we know the Loot of Lima and Benito stories and legends evolved from that 1815-1825 period of history. It is not impossable that some of the more wealthy Spanish from south America shipped thier wealth of coins that have been hoarded in family for many decades, back to spain during the turmoil of Independance.
