In 1966 we converted to metric coins . up to then all our coins were 50% silver except the pennies that were copper , after 66 the only coin they made 97% silver was 50 cent coin and only for one year 1966 . then no more silver coins ever . What happened was the silver content was worth more than the coin value ( an ordinary 50c silver sells for $7.oo
today) so the Chinese in particular were hourding these coins the day they came out of the mint . you would be pretty lucky to even see one today . luckily my dad kept some 14 of which I inherited , but Ive never dug one up plenty of the nickel ones though .
