Congrats bud!!

In our hobby it is hardly ever the condition of the piece that counts.  It is the piece of history that it represents.

For instance, I saw where an 1858 half dime in perfect condition sold for more than $20,000 US while mine might only be worth 15 bucks.  My half dime was put thru the ringer so bad that I had originally mistook it for a broken piece of a pull tab and came close to throwing it away until I saw the words " of America" on it!

My point is only that we should all enjoy the history that these pieces represent and hold out hope for that silver piece that is in great collectible condition.

Nice find!  Your coin is referred to by collectors as a "Classic Head" large cent.  They were minted from 1808 to 1814.  There were two varieties of 1814 coins, a "Plain 4" and a Crosslett 4."  The Plain 4 looks like a 3 without serifs, while the Crosslet 4 has a serif or bar on the crossstroke of the 4...not to worry too much...neither one is more valuable than the other.

Yours looks like a Plain 4 in About Good or Poor condition, probably worth about $20-25 retail.  However, since you did not send a photo of the reverse, it could increase or decrease the condition and therefore the value based on its grade.

Oooops!

Did not mean to type a "3" - should have been a "4."

Will go back to using "Preview" - that's what it is for.
