I see that the new 2010 pennies are going to have a shield on the back. 2.5% copper with balance zinc.
They say the design will appear from this year forward.

well, with that zinc to copper content that won't last long in the soil.   (come to think of it, it's amazing how valuable our modern pennies might be 40 years from now when the majority of them have disintegrated Cheesy )

I just read that, according to the mint, it cost 1.62 cents to produce one. 6.03 cents for a nickel. That was 2009. Maybe they should offer an incentive program to get people to turn over the pennies we all have just laying around. . . the funky ones, of course.

of course, when they realize the only way out of the mess we've created during the last 70 years is to re-value the dollar the problem will probably take care of itself.    $100 new dollars to the ounce of gold and $100 old dollars to the new $ should just about do it....and then keep the whole thing tied to either gold or silver or both.  Maybe then we'll also go back to using real metals in our coins rather than zinc and clad.
