Hi All,
been sorting stuff out"again" I found this coin many years ago and always thought it was a "washer" I cleaned it prior to putting it in the scrap.
It is a coin!! and has a date 177? .
Here my dilima back then all bullets were "musket" balls made of lead.the hole in this coin measures    .400" is it possible for a "round projectile" made of lead to penetrate through a copper coin???,do not remember where I found this one.
..........HH........Johnnn

Johnnn, if the coin is in that bad of shape, the hole could have very easilly have been put there in the late 1800's/early 1900's with the coin being used as a target either in a competition shoot or an exhibition (like Annie Oakley).    Could be they were just looking around for small round targets that weren't worth anything but scrap.

A .400 hole could be from a .38, .357, .35 Remington, .35 Whelen, 9mm, .380 caliber projectile.
It's hard to tell..
I have seen quite a few "shot coins", and they were popular souvenirs and a lot of people would 'emulate" the antics of Oakley, the Topperweins and their like from the late 1800s til about 1945 or so (the heyday of the exhibition shooter) so these can still be recovered in yards and other areas. (Home 'shot" ones), and fairgrounds and gathering areas, although this is doubtful, as they were snatched up as souvenirs.

Johnnn, as a long time shooter, I can assure you that a bullet will not just penetrate a coin unless the coin is held in a vice, and a big one at that. Coins shot in mid air are bent and spin off like a ricochet deflected by the bullet and deflecting the bullet path as well. Laid against the rock, those I have shot have all been bent or smashed where hit. People sometimes mistake shot coins for those having been hit by a lawnmower blade.

As has been suggested, you most likely have a souvenir coin of a sharpshooter show with the simulated bullet hole having been punched into the coin with a deliberately flawed punch and die. When I was a kid, we visited Fort Ticonderoga in New York and there were plenty of souvenirs of the old fort, all faked for our convenience. Circus sharpshooters derive income from such souvenirs. Wild West traveling shows survived partly from ticket sales and partly from the souvenirs they sold.

Well then, I was wrong and Annie Oakley herself shot it from the back of her horse.

Feel better now?

And don't forget about those Chinese coins shot with square bullets!
