Whatever you decide to do, practice on some common date coins that aren't worth a lot first.

Good luck.

In general, don't clean your coins.
Collectors hate cleaned coins and it reduces there value.
If you've found the coin detecting and it's crusty then the best options and electrolysis or an ultrasonic cleaner.

If you think or have a hint the coin is of value, DO NOT CLEAN it.  Silver and Aluminum foil and baking soda works good and no Damage incurred.   Ferric Chloride works on coins of no value and you want to just see them better.  A 3 minute bath 1% and rinsed out boiling water can help them.  Copper coins can be cleaned up from the Green and Gick with Olive Oil but it takes a Long time.   Month or two.   Not sure how that one works but it does.   Some type of acid or Alkali that does the job.  I think Alkali.
