The Franklin Mint offered a set of 24k gold plated coins for collectors. Some desperate person or some child may have opened theirs spending it rather than keeping it.

I don't think so.  It was worth more than a dollar to the Franklin Mint because they sold them at a premium price.  Good to see you back Frazdad!      Detecting

When the Franklin Mint sells anything like that, they promote it as highly collectible and they put it into a fancy folder. I suppose it depends on how many of them were sold and how many were scrapped. I once bought an auction box of miscellaneous stuff and inside were 200 issues of a sold gold, 24k, replica of a stamp from the Franklin Mint. All told, there was 200 grams of gold. Not a bad return on a $20.00 auction bid. No, not eBay. A face to face auction. I won 5 boxes in total of what people thought was junk and each of them had some sort of treasure or other. A few rare books, some old clothing from the 1800s, stuff like that. The best was the gold.

Now that I mention it, 6oz of gold might be good to sell right about now. Pardon me while I go and find that box.
