Indian Head Penny 186?

(1/1)

JMummey:
The condition of the coin doesn't match the fact that the fourth digit is missing. The area where the fourth digit should be is smooth as if no digit was ever there, the other 3 digits are in good condition, I would consider the coin overall to be in very poor condition (ex. 'Liberty' verbiage on the headdress is worn away). I've never found any reference to printing errors like this for a coin from this time period where a digit is left off, have any of you? This is a coin my father purchased for very little many years ago from an old farm house auction in Ohio. I've started researching it for him just on the slim chance that it has value. Let me know if you have any advice on something like this, I'm sorry the photo is grainy, I took the photo with my terrible cell phone:) Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

I too would pursue that one.  Could have been a Filled Die and Error worth some Cha Ching.  Need a micro photo of the date.

GoldDigger1950:
Go to Google images and look up Indian Head Cent (not penny) and also use the word obverse which will show you the backs of the coins. Almost every year had one tiny thing different about the back of the coins so use that as a clue. Fortunately you only have 10 years to dig through since you know it was in the 1860s.

Also, some years were of different metal than copper.

JMummey:
Adding this new photo, this is from a series of hi res photos my dad had taken of the coin (they were just printed so I took a photo of them with my horrible camera), I am still researching the markings on the back (he didn't have any photos taken of the back) - hope everyone is having a fab Monday!
