As much as I like them too, and have hunted many early French sites, and dug some myself...  it's only worth a few dollars.  You'd need a very high grade one to get $90.

I know the market, I sell coins including French, including those.  They are common and not worth much when dug.  I'm not even sure I've seen a great one get $90 and I have been buying French coins steady for at least the last 5 years. (and digging some even longer)

Its not just the coin that holds the value but where it was found, this particular coin has been documented because of what was happening in the village where it was located at the time, it was a very short period where french and english royals were getting married and a few acres of land in that particular village was given to king louisX1V as a token although never called a twin town its well documented, In the village church above the door is a large figure cut of stone which is painted with gold leaf carrying the same coat of arms as on the coin.
So the value of the coins worth is what ever a collecter is willing to pay for it, due to the coins location its a one off as todate no more have been found there.

So that would mean every piece of metal you find at that site is worth $90? Or just the coins?  Or?

You're free to value a coin anyway you want but you won't find many who agree that coming up with that figure how you did, and stating it basically as fact,  is the right thing to do. You'd need a very specific collector to even get $20.

You may of missed the point, it wasnt a valuation it was a offer and it wasnt $90 it was £90 which the the pound is worth more than the dollar so in effect was offered around $105 cash which i could have walked away with, theres plenty of rich people in that village would proberly give me more for that particular coin if i wanted to sell it which holds a valued history to where it was found.
Im not disputing your a coin dealer and know your stuff but you dont understand the history behind such a find when connected to where it was found and what was happening at that time here in that small southwest of England village.
If found in say some typical common field without connections it would proberly fetch £10-15 in its condition.

  Here's what you said...

"Beleave it or not that knackered coin is worth about ?90.00, so they must be quite rare."

No they are not rare, and no they are not worth 90 pounds, and no I did not misunderstand what was written. I did make an error saying $90, but it doesn't matter because it's only worth a few dollars or pounds and regardless of what one person offered you're general statement is incorrect,....  and that is my point and perhaps you are the one who has misunderstood.

Anything not just coins, Value of something is what someone is willing to pay for it ie: if something fetches £100 on a particular day then that was the value of its worth at that time, if it fetches £50 the following day then thats its worth at that particular time.
Just take note of the media when something goes to aution and gets inflated sums of money which in turn sets a new value to that item
Im not a coin dealer as already stated infact im miles from it been in the TV video trade, but  do know one thing the money in the hand is what the value of the item is worth.
Maybe your right in what your saying over in the USA  cant comment on that but you also must realize that the market can work different over here we are history crazy due to the amount of history we have and if someone with money wants something they feel a connection to they pay the earth its simple as that.
By the way on a serious note, you say a few pounds, a few is three or more can you actually say how much? because im interested in buying some off you .

Regards
