Go Up Go Down

Every Friday there is an open air market near me that I attend while walking the dog. Today, I found this beautiful coin, in a plastic box holder, in absolutely pristine condition. I paid all of $2.00 for it. I look forward to finding out its value.

It is 2 inches or 5 centimeters in diameter and appears to be made of a brass and copper alloy.

Very interesting piece, it's large size makes me think commemorative rather than circulation coinage.
the series of arms on obverse may be emperors dynastics,
the inclusion of arabic numbers in the central line of reverse
characters seems odd.
also what appears to be a manufacturers stamp at bottom reverse.
Ive searched a bit, finding nothing similar. I'd guess that the writing on the holder tells the tale.
No Doubt a Score for $2..             Looking forward to seeing this identified     Wink

Hey GD, tried to do a little translating which is not so good but It may be a tax token .  But I was only able to translate a few characters from the reverse side.  As I would need to know the stroke order of the characters, which I don't and have a translation program which I don't  Undecided

Literal translation of four characters and this is a rough one:
Tax, Customs house, 100, All around (Circuit)

My advice, take it to a Chinese market and see if someone can identify it.

Since I made this post, I have moved from Australia to the USA and the coin has yet to surface during unpacking (which is about 60% complete). As soon as I locate it again, I'll take it to the local Chinese restaurant. Mostly Vietnamese there but some do read Chinese since I asked about a calendar on the wall which caused a flurry of activity. That resulted in a cook being thrust to the front to translate the writing. Hadn't thought about this coin though. Thanks for bringing it up.
