Numismatic Collection Sharing

(1/1)

kaisercoins:

Hi,

I have built a numismatic website prototype for treasure hunters, numismatists and hobby archaelogists. As of now I have uploaded the first 500 coins out of 100,000 ancient/modern coins.
Main purpose is to provide a free platform tailored for sharing and researching findings and artefacts.

I would appreciate any feedback you have.

Once you give me feedback I can integrate your suggestions or nice to haves. It's totally up to you how you would like to have the website.

(it's a bit slow now, but will change once I move to a faster server)

Thank you and have a nice day :-)

What I would find absolutely worth its weight in platinum is a search facility that used the image of a coin. Upload a suitable close up photo and search for a match.

Wow. Would that ever be fantastic! I'm sure that implementing that would be a nightmare and cost hundreds of programming hours.

Hi Kaisercoins

First let me welcome you to thunting.com. I registered on your site to have a look at it and the first thing that I found is that you have coins and medals together, personally I would never think of looking in coins to find a medal. I would also have a section for memorabilia, although they are coins in some way.

@GoldDigger1950: Great idea! Altough it requires heavy image processing it would be a great feature. I'll see what I can do :-)

@xavier: Thank you for your welcome and your response! Very good point!
If I got you right you mean something like this on the very top of the filtering section:

[ ] Coins
[ ] Medals
[ ] ...
[ ] ...

Thank you guys for your answers!

:) Yes that's it, it don't matter how many you have in there. Are you going to be only doing coins? because buttons are very often a subject of discussion too and if you can do it with the photo search like GD said it would be great.

BitburgAggie_7377:
If you follow Xavier's logic, you might want to consider a section for tokens also (although GD's proposed search functionality should search through all the sections since many people mistake tokens for coins).  I agree with my compadres, though, that your site has a whole lot of potential.  I am glad you've put some effort into it and hope to watch grow both in size and in value to the target communities.

GoldDigger1950:
There are already algorithms for picture comparisons so your task might be more of finding a host to make it a fast search. A hint. Don't do that fast image flashing thing you see on TV. That takes up huge amounts of processing time - about 65% or more. Just put up a note or image saying the search is in progress - please stand by.

Thanks for taking my suggestion seriously. We do get lots of requests to help research a coin or token here and I have occasionally used the Google Image search facility.

@xavier: Primarily coins in the beginning, but I'll progressively try to extend the scope to associated finds like buttons, tokens, fragments of pottery, etc.
@BitburgAggie_7377: Good point! Thank you!
@GoldDigger1950: True, I think it must be doable. Although it would take me a bit of time I could do the following in the meantime.
Most coins I have come with a weight field (in gram). I can easily add a note to each coin displaying what its weight is worth in platinum. Additionally, I can add this information and wrap it into a filter.

Adding this weight attribute to the filter section would allow a browsing by "worth of its weight in platinum/gold/silver etc."

Worth its weight:
[ ] > 50 GPB
[ ] 10..50 GPB
[ ] 5..10 GPB
[ ] 1..5 GPB
[ ] < 1 GPB

Please correct me If I got your idea wrong :-)
