OK guys,

I hear you all talk about 'seated' coins and didn't know the definition. I looked up on the internet and found,
Seated coinage Term commonly used for Liberty Seated coinage.
second toning Any toning, natural or artificial, that results after a coin is dipped or cleaned.

OK, now I read this definition and still don't know what the heck they are speaking of... I know that most of the coins shown appear to be silver coins but I really would like to know, in laymans' terms, what the heck is a seated coin (and a photo if it would help). thanks,Coloma Gold

Ok.....a picture (or actually a set of pictures) is worth a few thousand words.    Here are samples of "seated" Liberty, "standing" Liberty, and "walking" Liberty.    Seated Liberty was produced at one time or another (between 1837 and 1891) on every denomination of silver coin minted by the US.  The "standing" Liberty quarter dollar was produced between 1916 and 1930.   The "walking" Liberty half dollar was produced between 1916 and 1947.

OK, nice photos but what does 'seated' mean in the context of numismatic items?? Obviously it does not mean they are sitting.....so what does it mean. The reference books refer to the 'seated' term but really doesn't define it. thanks, Coloma Gold

i might be wrong here, but to me it's called seated because the figure of liberty on the coin
is sitting down, nothing to do with how the coin is made or it's composition.

or have i missed something?

Jamjars is correct.   It is called a "Seated Liberty" because the coin shows Liberty sitting.   A "Standing Liberty" has the figure of Liberty standing, and a "Walking Liberty" shows the figure of Liberty in mid-stride.   Sometimes things really are as simple as they appear to be at first glance.  Please see the "Obverse" section of the following reference from wikipedia (chosen only because it was handy)

You might also enjoy this webpage where members of the Collectors Universe have been invited to "Post your favorite seated coins!"......you'll notice they all have ONE thing in common (other than being minted in the US)

I started collecting coins in the late 1960's.  Pure and simply the term "seated" means the figure of Liberty on the obverse of the coin is sitting down!  That's all.  Coin collecting led me into treasure hunting...  now I don't really collect at all!                         Detecting

Thanks guys... I guess it was just too obvious. I saw the postings that showed standing figures and thought they were also inlcuded in the 'seated' definition so that confused me.   I also know that questions of come up with other coins (wheaties, Rosies, etc) and some of the people on the forum do not live in the US and may not know what is being discussed. Perhaps the forum can put out a list of common definitions for those people so they won't be left out in the dark?? Just a thought. Coloma Gold

Sounds like a good idea....especially if we include a picture of each.   Will put that on towards the top of the "To Do List" (unless one of the other members beats me to it).
