This is some info from Nick A on Buckeye Treasure Hunting.

by Nick A ? 28 Jul 2009, 09:24
It's a Masonic Penny, and a VERY nice one. All hand engraved on a large cent. There are many versions of them, but yours is by far one of the coolest ones I have ever seen. I had a link about the history of the Masonic Penny, but of course, I cannot find it now. They were given to lodge members and symbolize a faithful days? wages. The keystone with the letters HTWSSTKS which mean Hiram, Tyrian, Widow?s Son, Sendeth To King Solomon. Often just pocket pieces, a Masonic chapter penny was a personally prized possession, and could be used as collateral for borrowing money. When the debt was repaid, the valued coin was returned.

It looks like Hugo Rudolph either became a member or reached a milestone (may have completed his degrees to become a Royal Arch Mason) level in the Masons on Oct. 16, 1914 and was awarded/presented with the penny.

I see it says Acacia Chapter, Acacia is usually related to a fraternity based in Freemasonry. Looks like Acacia Chapter 195 of the Royal Arch Masons is based in Cincinnati and is still active.

Not sure where you live, but if it was Springfield, Hugo B. Rudolph Sr., was born in Germany 1854, his son, Hugo Bert Rudolph Jr. born 31 Jan 1881 - died 28 Jan 1961. His WWI Draft Card lists his occupation as registered pharmacist. He lived at 330 West Liberty in Springfield in 1917-1942 (at least). He was short, medium build and had grey eyes and dark hair. In 1942 he was working at Schmidt's Drug Store at 63 W. Main. My guess is that your penny belonged to this Hugo B. Rudolph Jr.

Hello wds . A very nice find . An 1826 modified large cent/Masonic Penny must be worth something to a collector of these types of tokens and relics , any idea of the value ? Thanks for posting .

Masonic Pennies are not all that rare as a group but as individual items they can be. There were a lot of them used for a lot of years. Smaller memberships meant smaller mintage so they are rare only in their small numbers.
