I am impressed.  The oldest coin I ever found was an 1834 silver half-dime that I found near an old farm house near the Atlantic coast in Connecticut several years ago, and it is in about the same shape as your silver coins.  I think the salt air played havoc with it.

Congrats!

With your coin finds weather they be ancient or modern would it be best to clean them or leave them in their found condition when offering them for sale ?   and would cleaning them increase or decrease their value ?

Well, it depends on the sort of coin or more important the material. Silver coins should be cleaned in general. Depending on the quality of silver used they will tarnish / turn black. This can be removed by lemon juice or special solutions. However the coins will need to be neutralized afterwads again and sealed using neutral wax to prevent further oxidation.

However if you have copper coins it is best to leave them as is. E.g. removing the patina from an old copper or bronce Roman coin would put its valu near zero. There are only few cases where this should be done and an artifical patina be put back on it afterwards.

In most cases you can destroy more by cleaning than if you leave them as is.

Regards,

Christian

with the USA being so "young" finding coins ( 1700's era) that old is very very hard to do here  but not out of the question --- cool old coin esp like the "bear" one
