Most of the best coins I've found were within 8 inches of the top of the soil. And most of them were within the first four inches. I've found only a few coins deeper than 8 inches and oddly enough some of the deepest I've found were clad common coins... And the older ones were usually no deeper than five inches. and more likely within the first 3 inches...Why? Who knows-maybe it was the strata of the soil or maybe something similar? Some of the deepest coins I've dug were with the CZ-5,CZ-6,CZ-3, and the 1266-x. One was with a Tesoro Golden Umax. And the absolute deepest was with a pulse machine water hunting machine. And the old Garrett Deepseeker-that Deepseeker was one sho-nuff deep going unit with it's 12" head and it's VLF/TR Circuitry. Wish Mr. Garrett would build some more of those just like the originals but with rechargeable bat packs in them----they used 6 9V bats and that gets expensive- but gosh almighty did they really go deep!!! Some of the best relic and coin units ever made-period!!!

Im glad you posted this, i use a Whites XLT, i dig coins as deep as 8" also. Pending on the soil conditions i have dug old coins that were only 2" on hard pack dirt roads and parking areas. I would think most machines do the same..... Hope to see more input on this.....DW

I also have a Whites Surfmaster II , i have dug coins, especially Quarters down 12"+ in fresh water and sandy beach areas. This machine takes 3-9V batteries and can be used on land and up to 100ft. deep. It is very sensitive to small gold, i have found small gold post earings used when they first pierce the ear.....DW

I dug up a modern dime about 5 inches down, can't imagine why it was that far down, I use a White's Prizm II....Also found an 1846 LG Cent at 6 inches, it was large, so easy to detect.

I like the path less taken, like we all do. But one morning up behind Lucky Baldwin's Gold Mountain mine, near Belleville, I was searching around a huge tree, my Garrett Ace 250 rang out and I dug a Delaware State quarter. it was under a few inches of pine needles, as was a wad of toilet paper and a pile of Doo. It must have fallen out of the poor guys (or Gals) pocket while nature called.

I have found coins at 12 inches (unfortunately a lot of iron, pulltabs and other junk).

The Surfmaster PI can really look deep!

One of my deepest coins was a 1971 50 cent piece about 8 inches, I have found older coins between 2 and 4 inches.
I have a Whites M 6 with the double D coil.
