I had one area in SW PA that was an old picnic grove that had halos on everything. I found silver dimes at 10". Was a bit hard in that the signal would disappear after you disturbed the ground and of course after you dug a deep hole. Detector was the Whites 5DB and also had an Arado 120.

a clad quarter at 7 inches in wet sand with a garrett 250. Don't know why because tests I've run with the machine indicate it goes to 4 and a half max in my backyard sand. ... I was out today and found a quarter which the depth scale said was more than 8 inches but it was within 2 inches of the top and was standing on its edge.I figure the depth reading was screwed up because it was standing on its edge. gambol

Hi,

So far, (new to this)  the deepest I have dug for a find is 5 inches.

I found what appeared to be an ashtray dump from the late 80's. I don't know how those coins came to be 5 inches deep.  I was impressed with my MXT that it gave such a strong signal through 5 inches of very dense clay.

I never knew 5 inches of soil could be so much work.  I used the pin-pointer to help me find the coins in that thick gummy gooey mess.  Smiley

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Most of mine were within the 4-6 inch range, but I was in Kansas for a hunt and found an Oklahoma tax token at about 14 inches with a minelab X-70. In the NW. most coins aren't very deep. When I was in Montana, most of the silver was right around 3-4 inches.

More of a relic hunter but dug a US Official Button, about the size of a modern quarter with a Troy Shadow X5 at 18 inches.

I use a Troy Shadow X5, I use factory presets as there is little to no mineralization near the coast in the dark sandy soil. Never have had to ground balance the detector as neutral settings are fine. This is by far the deepest detector that I have ever used.
