Hi all,
Found this coin in desolate Outback Australia, 70 kilometres from nearest settlement, maybe a camel driver passing through may have dropped it?
It was minted in the UK for the then Ceylon.

Happy New Year, may all your finds be interesting and historic.

Found this coin from the CSA TREASURY in Danville, Virginia on Saturday, February 7th, 2009. This is the 15th coin found since 2008 and it is the 5th gold coin I have found. Thanks for looking.

Go Up Go Down

My best find came back in April.  I was detecting my favorite site with my DFX when I got a faint hum from the All Metal channel.  I slowed down to investigate further.  As I swept my coil over the spot, I got a faint chirp around the penny/dime area, but then it was gone.  My guess was that it was a deep square nail.  I swept the coil from a different angle and again i got a faint chirp.  It pinpointed at 9.5 inches, so I even though I was expecting some deep iron, I decided to dig to be sure.  I dug a nice deep plug and swept the coil over the plug.  Nothing in the pile.  I scanned the hole again, this time getting no signal.  Typical of iron, I almost abandoned it and was about to replace the plug.  I decided to pinpoint the bottom of the hole, and in a deep corner my Vibraprobe went crazy.  I felt around for what I was sure would be an old nail when out came a thick beautiful coin.  I did not know at the time what I had, but I knew it was no underweight counterfeit!  I excitedly placed it in a vinyl coin holder and into my pouch it went.

I could not help examining and re-examining the mystery coin on the ride home every time I caught a red light.  By my second or third light I was sure it was a Draped Bust Cent; by my sixth or seventh light I was able to make out a date, 1798.  I had my first eighteenth century US coin!!!

After a good cleaning in hydrogen peroxide, and some emails to experts on large cents, I discovered I had a very scarce variety (Sheldon 181)!!!

This is undoubtibly my best find to date, but I am determined to top it in 2010!!!

Thanks for looking!
Neil

Here is the story of my best find this year. I had hunted this area with my older detector before, but found nothing. It was a very historic area, so I just knew there should be something there I wasn't finding. It was this area that made me decide to finely break down and buy a Minelab E-trac. It was only my second trip out with the E-trac I returned to this area. I got a good solid 12-44 on the Etrac at 9 inches. When I first saw a silver rim, I assumed either a Merc. or was really hoping it just might be a Barber. Nope, neither! It was an 1833 capped bust dime! That was my best find all year, found on October 1st, 2009

Hi

My best find of 2009....

Well, the most amazing ever on my beaches here.

That alabast little pot, glued/sealed and containing two 18K golg wedding bands.

Found on the low tide mark, near a breakwater, with the Minelab Quattro.

My best find from the past 5 years came in April of 2009.  It's a late 1700's Regiment of Royal Artillery officer's belt plate.  It would have been worn by the Captain of the 2nd Battalion.  Featured in October's issue of Western and Eastern Treasures magazine and still featured on the on-line version.  Very rare in any condition!

Go Up Go Down

The hottest ground in my area is in, believe it or not, old school yards. Can't explain, but to say they dumped their coal cinders on the school yard is an under statement. Ground balance was 80 and the FEO reading was either 1 or 3.
Very few items would lock on close to where coins normally read. This was also verified by both an E-Trac and M6 used by my hunting buddies.
I'd been digging many zinc signals that turned out to be old pull tabs. So I almost let this 10k fellow rest in piece, but dug anyway.
