What gave it the edge in a EMP environment?

It used vacuum tubes in its avionics.

The A3-J predated the MIG-25, old buddy. By more than 5 years. The F4 Phantom was faster on the straight run but the MIG could corner faster. The RA-5C beat them both. The SR-71 didn't have the speed until the advent of the ramjet intakes which would allow it to fly at lower altitudes.

Old Valve or Tube Technology was the focus of the Contest.   Guess I did not focus on that good enough.

If the Nuke War was ever to start, we would be looking for those old tube radios and trying to remember how they worked.

I can just remember the High Voltages, Grid, Screen, Cathode, Anode.

Thank god for books.
