ArfieBoy:
I'm thinking it was the SST  (Super Sonic Transport)!   I suppose it was EMP Proof because of Business and Government leaders rode it!?

Hobbyist:
I'll hazard a guess that it had to be EMP-proof so it could keep flying during a nuclear war to deliver its payload, and it was the Mig 25 Foxbat. If this is correct, just recycle the prize to another contest. ;)

GoldDigger1950:
It was the A3-J Vigilante by North American Rockwell. A nuclear payload was deployed from between the engines by gravity. The plane would unlock the payload and it would slide out in an "over the shoulder" type of bombing run. The weapons and the aircraft electronics were all sealed against interference by gold mesh seals inside the skin and gold embedded in the cockpit window glass. It was the only aircraft ever designed solely to deliver a nuclear payload. The RAD hardening (as we called EMP protection back then) was to allow the plane to survive a nuclear burst from within the kill zone. Oh, they'd be miles away but still inside the zone. It held the speed record for over 20 years as the fastest thing that flies until the F-14 and F-15 came along and beat it. The SR-71 came later.

Its mission was changed when the odd circumstance of the weapon following the plane after deployment was caused by slipstream issues. The weapon delivery was inaccurate as a result and despite nuclear payload "close enough is good enough" strategy, the mission was just too risky. The plane was then redesigned as a photographic reconnaissance plane during Viet Nam and re-designated as the RA-5C. The super high resolution cameras were the best that had ever been developed and the technology was upgraded and miniaturized over the next 40 years in military aircraft. Those bunker bombs we all watched during the Iraq war were the latest generation of cameras. Even the Hubble Space Telescope used cameras whose ancestors came from that plane.

This may not be the answer that Homefire was looking for, but every word of this is true. I worked on that airplane during the Viet Nam War. It was a masterpiece of engineering and looked fast just sitting on the flight deck. Attached is a picture of RVAH-9 (squadron designator) doing a fly-by of the aircraft carrier USS Independence. On the surface, below the plane, you can see the USS Independence. The photo was taken with a high resolution side looking camera from another Vigilante. A lovely plane in every respect. I was saddened when they were removed from service and decommissioned.

Contest still running.

Mig 25 Foxbat was the Plane.

What gave it the edge in a EMP environment?
