I have been to this cave and it is incredible. Also extremely dangerous.

Guaranteed he didn?t use the rule of thirds and/or a line with tie offs and a reserve reel ?  Wise

During dive training, a friend of mine in a pool using SCUBA sneezed and nearly drowned from it. His reflex actions caused him to spit out the regulator and suck in water. The instructor said later that had this happened at 20 feet, he'd have drowned before he could have gotten to the surface.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I?ve sneezed and coughed under water at depths you don?t want to think about, but usually held the reg in with my hand, although have swallowed water a few times too.
Thing is keep calm and grab your octopus or inflator, and stick that in your mouth.  Wise

Absolutely right, Ray, but remember we were under instruction at the time.

I was poolside at that time along with half the class. It was the perfect lesson for everyone. You know how that is.

Anyway, I just wonder about the cave diver situation in this topic. Was he diving without a buddy? That would be unthinkable to me. I can't read the article now because the link is dead.

With or without in cave diving is irrellevant as if you have a buddy he?s normally behind you (That?s why your octopus is normally at least 2 metres 20cm long ). You also have everything redundant, that means double tanks, each seperate with seperate single stages and second stages (Usually mounted on the sides), plus a couple of reserve smaller tanks if you?re going any depth.
Depth in cave diving is counted as the amount of penetration as opposed to actual depth generally.
Air you use the 1/3rd rule, 1/3rd going in, turn round, 1/3rd to get out, and 1/3rd reserve.

You always use a line on a reel, one large as the main line, and one smaller in case the main line breaks. The main line gets tied off securely every 5 to 10 metres, and is also then clipped with direction pegs. If the line breaks. You STOP.  You or your buddy stays still and the other goes back connected to you with the smaller reel, untill he finds the line where it broke. Then he tugs and you reel in till you?re BOTH back at the broken line end. Then you ABANDON the dive and head back. NEVER CONTINUE A DIVE WITH A LINE THAT YOU HAVE REPAIRED UNDER WATER !!

It's been a long time now since I have dived and I have inner ear issues now keeping me from more than a couple of meters now. My daughter is a diver. She is doing her first night dive tonight. She's loving it and can't wait to help me investigate local sites.

Go Up Go Down

Hi all

You know what they say divers do it deeper I have never done any cave diving but I guess that it must be one hell of a thrill. One bad experience that I had was with my buddy diver well I did not know him better than that any how we went out at a place if I recollect well it was called lundudno in the cape in fact cape tows SA we hade just a few meters of sand (beach)the rest of the place were sharp rocks I told this buddy diver that what ever happened that was the way and the only way out any how to cut a long story short we went out not far 200 or 300m out and this guy disappeared no sign of him any where in the water (we were at less that 10m at the time)so I came back to the surface and did a 360 to look for him and sure thing I found him going straight for the rocks well by the time I got out this bloke was in shreds bleeding all over the place when I asked him to explain what had happened he told me that there was a big shark in the water(I saw no shark)I then asked him how big was the shark as I did not see any he brought his arms from his side and raised them till shoulder height that?s a 1m20 fish and you did all that to your self for that sardine yes he replied well I learned my lesson that day NEVER dive with some one you don?t know well at least not in dangerous places .

Best Regards
Xavier
