Go Up Go Down

I'm wondering if anyone has used one of the underwater video cameras that many of the sporting goods stores sell?  The camera itself is usually encased in a fish like housing, weighted and then dropped into the area for searching.  Here in the great frozen north of Minnesota, the ice fishermen seem to be the target market.

I was thinking more of using one when the lakes are liquid and just trolling it slowly from the boat.

Anyone?

Camera's are used quite often to detect sunken objects . The problem with a simple camera is that it only point in one direction when it is towed . As soon as it is not moving anymore it points in just any direction . For proper scanning of sunken objects you need a ROV . The ROV is also a underwater camera but it is build in a waterproof housing which can be moved in any direction by using electro motors with props . Even when the boat does not moveit can be lowered and adjusted to the left or right .  Usually you detect a target by using a magnetometer or an underwater PI metal detector . Once you have a target located in that way you lower your ROV to check-up on what you have located . Beats diving after it all the time . Once you made sure that there is a worthwile target you start diving for it ,  or you use a grab to raise the object above water .   Cornelius

I have seen some plans for building a homemade ROV.  That may very well become one of the projects I will do when I retire later this year.  First of course, is I have to retire....lol!!  But metal detecting underwater is what my plans are and I intend to go at it with a vengeance.  Of course I won't find any treasure ships in the lakes, but outboard motors and such are treasure to me.

Thank you for your input.

That is some serious ROV!  Did you make it?  Did you have plans, or did you just "wing" it?
That would be an absolute blast to use in some of the lakes in MN.  Looks like PVC, maybe sea scooters for propulsion or MinnKota trolling motors?
What a great project to work on.

I completely agree.  That does look like it would be a great project to work on.  I may have to try and see if  I could find some plans somewhere.  Very cool.

I just Googled in Underwater ROV plans, and there are several entries.  There is also a Yahoo group of ROV enthusiasts.  I didn't realize there were so many people interested in such an endevour as building and ROV.

The underwater cameras that your looking at are very limit not just in that they need to be towed for stability be some do not have any form of lighting on them

Hey Numb, thanks for posting that url.   The guy has some very interesting information there.  Looks like some of his plans would be simpler to build than a lot of the homebuilt metal detectors some members here build.
