WHAT IS DOWSING?
Dowsing is the ability of a person to make a location of an object of one's search over a map/photo/sketch and in the field. The most commom type of instrument dowsers use to accomplish this is an L-shaped metal rod (see my picture) or a pendulum. Some dowsers can even use their bodily responses without the aid of an instrument to make locations.

WHAT MAKES DOWSING WORK?
Each dowser has his/her own beliefs on what they feel makes dowsing work.
Dowsing involves a lot of mental energy. Keeping a positive attitude is paramount. Your ability to concentrate on the item of search will make or break the amount of success you have.
Some believe that dowsing comes from a higher spiritual power and some believe that it's related to electromagnetic energy. We know that part of how dowsing works is based on the physics principle of " like attracts like ".
We also know that WE need to be part of the dowsing procedure to get a reaction from the instruments. So whatever the reason for it working, we know it does work and continue to practice it.

WHAT CAN BE FOUND USING DOWSING?
The list seems limitless.....treasure, minerals, crude oil, fresh groundwater, missing pets, persons, battlefield relics. Just as important, dowsing can be used to obtain information about yourself, a family member or the credibility of another person. Dowsing does not work on the lottery nor will it work to predict the future.

WHO CAN DOWSE, AND HOW CAN I TELL IF I HAVE THE ABILITY?
Most everyone has the ability to dowse. Take a 6" long piece of string and tie a metal nut onto the end of the string. Then hold the string between your writing hand thumb and index finger at the end of the string with your other fingers spread slightly apart about chest high and about 1 foot from your chest. Your wrist should have a slight bend downward in it and your elbow should have a slight bend also, keeping it slightly higher than your wrist.
Look at the nut and mentally suggest the pendulum to show you your "YES" answer and watch for a movement from your home made pendulum. Common movements are a swing to and fro motion or a circle motion. Then do the same thing but say silently "NO" and watch what the pendulum does. After the movements become consistent, keep a record of your yes and no movements by drawing them onto an index card. These movements are your personal yes and no codes and is what your pendulum will indicate to you when you pose yes/no type inquiry questions to it and as you work in the field or over maps/photos indicating the direction to follow towards your location of interest.
Practice this for about a week and you should start to notice that it becomes eaiser to get a reaction than when you started. If in the beginning you don't get any movement, just take a break and try again later.
After about 2 weeks of practice you should be ready to purchase a better pendulum, such as the ones available at rock or crystal shops, online, ect.

HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY MENTAL CONCENTRATION?
Even when you are not dowsing with your L-rod/pendulum, you can still practice mental concentration excercises to keep you in shape for when the real dowsing assignment occurs. Practice as often as you can.
Find some pictures of what it is you want to look for, such as a picture of some gold bars, a jar of silver coins or paper money, ect., and practice looking at them, then look away from the picture and begin to retain this image in your mind's eye for as long as possible with your eyes open.
Try to recall these images during the day for practice without the L-rod/pendulum, trying your best to exclude any interferences and stray thoughts in your mind. In the beginning, you will become tired and fatigued, so just take a break and return later to practice. When you can eventually hold this image clear in your mind's eye for about a minute without being distracted you will then start to have success in your efforts to make a location. There are many different dowsing procedures that work to make a recovery. I listed some basic ones here to get you started. Over time with practice you may develop a better way. I encourage you to use whatever methods work best for you.
