Was wondering if any one has dowed that area as there was lots of caches stored their during the 1800's and early 1900's Must be a lot of gold coins in their,silver also.Maybe K.V.M found some if he ever was in their?

It's a rough area, and anything is possible.   I've always dreamed about exploring the area using a drone with a good camera set up......but having been on the edges of it, I'm not sure how much help the aerial photographs would be.   Too many curves, twists, overhangs, etc so it's either explore on foot or put your faith into something like dowsing (or throwing darts at the map)

With a few men with GPS and a drone or ultralite to guide them a man could explore and find  something and have the drone or aerial or chopper get him out at the end of the day without fault.

I'm not completely sold on that, especially if you got injured.   The Malpais has a lot of partially collapsed lava tubes, which means there are a lot of very deep spots that are very hard to reach from directly above, even if you can make visual contact with the injured person... and the way some of those tubes twist and turn, there's no guarantee your going to select the right tube if you do try to go in from a more accessible point.     

Still, with the right team and the right equipment and a worthwhile goal in mind..........too bad most of it is a National Monument now and thus off-limits, and what is not National Monument is National Conservation Area which is almost as bad.

There is a book ' Malpias Gold '.  The book is about an old tail of Spanish Gold miners trying to evade the Indians long ago by sneaking down into Mexico by going into the dreaded Malpias area.  The mules were many and were loaded down with raw gold.  The Indians caught up with them and circled them.  The Spanish miners fought for their lives but it wasn't no use.  They thought they might make it out alive if they put all the Gold in a cave [lava tube] and tried to sneak out or fight their way back to Mexico.  The Indians killed 'em all except for one man I think it was that got out alive just barely because he was lost in the caves.  The Indians buried the end of the lava tube and considered the area off limits to even members of the tribe.  As usual the US Government got wind of this treasure and made it off limits to us modern day treasure hunters by making it government property.  I read this book over 15 years ago so my memory may be off some, so you read the book and see for yourself.  I think there is a good chance the Gold is still there.
