Hi Hepdalo, I have found a UK website the British Society of Dowsers.

  in their Learning Section you will find article ...What is Dowsing... it may answer some of your questions.
There is a paragraph called ...A Simple Dowsing Method...It appears that you need to have a clear idea in your mind of what you are looking for.

best regards Mike.

hepdalo;

The common dowsing rod, here, usually for water, is a springy fork from a willow. The arms are 1 foot to 1 1/2 foot (0.3048 to .45 m) with the pointer end 6 inches to 2 feet long... length is not important, its the user.

Have you tried an ordinary steel tape measure? Just extend it out in front of you, with the length as long as will support its self, without collapsing or over bending. If you get a response, it could be a number of things like waving up and down or side to side. You would have to use it a while, and get to understand it, so you can say what it is indicating.

I saw a guy try a tape measure, but he didnt believe in dowsing, it shocked him so much he was almost hysterical, he could not stop laughing! I believe in dowsing but cant seem to make it work, for me, even though I know it should. Just keep trying.

Ive heard all kinds of silly theories, as to why it works and how to make it work.... it just works, period. You can use anything that YOU feel (FEEL) will work for you. If you live where there is bamboo, try a limber green whip of bamboo, its conductive (some people insist on that) and being limber, you wont have much control over what it does. Try it horizontally, in front of you, like using a steel tape, and see what happens.

Map dowsing - try a small gold ring on a long hair. back and forth is no, circle is yes.

Lots of luck.....

the material used to make dowsing rods is not important- almost anything will do. thay  only point the way.its a mental process- as a plumber, i can pick out water lines,gas lines,sewer lines,electrical lines in the same ditch- give you depth, direction of flow,each pipe size and if its steel,copper or plastic for each pipe. i have done this many,many times. i use brazing rods. i have also used them to locate flint arrowheads up to 18'' deep. i'm planning a trip to arizona to dows gold nuggets. i know it will work.

hepdalo; Welcome

I can tell you how I made mine:

2 metal coat hangers

2 plastic soda straws

a good pair of pliers or even 2

1)  cut the hangers on each side at the bottom of the twist, under the hook;
2)  straighten each rod as straight as possible;
3)  make them the same length (cut a little bit to make even);
4)  bend both at about 7 inches or about 18 cm, from one end, to form right angles;
5)  if you think the long part is too  long, cut it to the length (the long part) that you want;
6)  put the short ends each into a straw  and hold them parallel.

The rods should cross, uncross, or do movements, while you walk (watch the ground, while  you walk, so you dont fall.) Devil

You will have to decide what the rod movements mean, to you.

You can also hold them (gently, dont bend) in your hands, without the straws, then you can feel them move.

OK, thats it for RODS 101. Class is out. Wise

Brian AKA goldigger (and sometimes dowser)

 Metal coat hangers work great. I still use the first pair I made. You can also cut them shorter and they will swing faster but they are harder to lock onto target for some reason and seem a little erratic. I made a huge pair from a brazing rod about 3 feet long but it's too front heavy, one day I'm going to solder a counter weight on them and see how they work.
 For some reason, I can't get a "Y" to work. I have tried wood, plastic, etc..
 Here is a tip, keep your dowsing rods below eye level. Don't ask me how I found that out.

kayakpirate;

Interesting, now that you mention it, I have NEVER seen any dowsing tool used above eye level. A tape measure is supposed to be held low, down by your side... maybe there is a connection.

Where I grew up, there was this lady claimed she could use a crow bar to find water... never saw her demonstrate it, though. I have seen a willow fork used, a lot, by different people. Some like to peel the hand holds, some like to do it bare-foot. But I could not detect that foot gear made a difference.... it is preference.

 I was talking about poking yourself in the eye. Some people bend a loop in the end of the rod just in case.
 But that got me curious.  I just dowsed with my arms straight up in the air and it worked fine.  It is just really tricky keeping the rods level.

But I can't get a Y rod to work. I have used oak and plastic. I will try stripping the bark and see if that helps.  I do live in a swamp, maybe that has something to do with it?

kayakpirate;

Water,water, everywhere and not a drop to dowse! Some people, that use bark on, Ive seen the bark strip, as the rod pulls down, just from the strength of the pull.... its amazing.

I understand you can make a fork with wire, like a coat hanger cut open, and even that is supposed to work. Try it out.

I have not been successful, with forked sticks.... one day, I will try a tape measure, or a stainless antenna whip (like a CB whip.) Right now, my greatest response has been on maps, because I use /yes-no/ response. I could try that with a willow wand... side to side for no and up and down for yes. Hmmmm.

Maybe the forked stick has never worked because I did not tell it, expressly, /Pull down like H., if there is water, down below./ I will have to try that.
