Go Up Go Down

I to have been confused about Meteorites. I have map dowsed a few meteorite. Only one of them was a true meteorite. The latest one is a rock that measures 7 X 7 and 5 inches high and weighs 22 pounds. That is a heavy rock. The contend is iron, nickel, granite,  iridium, tantalum and titanium and  some silver. Three spots on it are magnetic. The local rock shop gets excited but that?s all they know. Tomorrow I will file a window in it and see what it looks like.  If you have anymore information I would like it. If you want to keep the information private that is ok to?Thank You...Art

If looks could tell my guess is that it is a Meteorite. Also, I think that the only rock that has elemental nickle in it's native metal form is a Meteorite. Let someone who deals in meteorites have a look at it. A meteorite that size could have a 1k value and marring it may lower it.

I found about a dozen about that size for sell, most were under 1k. Only the person buying it can determine the price. I would take it to a good meteorite collector for an assessment. I have never found one or sold one, so just my opinion. I was surprised that something that size didn't sell for more, but it is just a rock and 1k is a lot of money.

If it contains granite- it's not a meteorite. Also if a meteorite is magnetic- it will be magnetic all the way around and not just in certain spots.

Hey Steve?.That  is why I brought the subject up?.I look at pictures and read what I can about Meteorites but can find only that they contain iron and nickel?..Looking for only iron and nickel signals I found a few rocks that had that contain. It was clear that most were natural rocks. This is the first time I have added Iridium into my searches. I went from 6 targets down to one. I read somewhere that the nickel  contain would be about 7 %. Using bathroom scales and all my math skills I was able to determine that it is about 7% nickel more or less. I was hoping that some one had a link with the mineral contain of Meteorites?.Heres a photo of the one the College dug and hauled off...Art

Art-

Here's a link to some meteorite indentification websites.

" That is a heavy rock. The contend is iron, nickel, granite,  iridium, tantalum and titanium and  some silver."

Just based on the content alone- it's not a meteorite.
