Hello, and my thoughts on your question.
At present the only logical answer regarding optimum rod length, must surely be related to maximising 'sensitivity' and practicalities of usage.
If they are too long or too heavy, then their balance in the hand will affect their basic physical stability.
I personally think that the rods are sensitive to the influences of electrostatic fields created by localised 'phenomena.'
Whether those fields exist due to purely charged sources, or E fields associated with magnetic fields, is something that I can't honestly say I have been able to differentiate.
The dowsing effect is a fascinating subject, and I am able to experience it with virtually any form of metal rods of random lengths. Alas, I have not spent time trying to resolve just what it is that may be causing the reactions affecting the rods. I cannot interpret them in any meaningful way, but I do have my own theories as to why such sources as flowing water, can create an 'aura' that forms the field which influences the divining rods.

After that brief ramble, then my opinion is that rod length is not critical for general searching.
The main criteria are 'good balance' and minimising their susceptibilities to inertial wandering and windage.
All the best, and tell us about your intentions in using them....Matt
