Make an L-rod or bobber or pendulum and explain to the child how it will point or swing to whatever they are thinking about. Now have the person leave the room and hide a candy bar (or some treat) so everyone else in the room knows where it is located. Now the person is called back into the room (or outside in the yard is much better) and as the person uses the L-rod or other tool the group will say "Warmer" or "Colder" depending if they are going towards the target or not. And as they get very near the target the group is louder and more excited. We learned this game in kindergarten (we did it deviceless) and while it is not exactly dowsing, it is close enough and easy and fun for the child (or skeptic adults).
