Around 1990, the University of Munich, Germany recieved grant money to drill water wells in 3rd world countries.  The Professor took and equal number of Hydrogeologists and Dowsers.
In the end they drilled 2,000 water wells.  The Prof. found that it took the the Hydrogeologists about 2 months to determine if an area was suitable for drilling and they had a 20% success rate.  The Dowsers took about 2 minutes to determine if an area had water and had a 96% success rate.  So you be the judge.

That's the beauty of these forums you know. A person can write anything they want without providing any proof. Surely there must be a University of Munich web site where this study is available to read. It would be nice if you posted a link.

I did some serious searching and any link to such a study now turns up a 404 page. It seems there may not be any such study. I hope you can show me I'm wrong.

Greetings....

The actual events are slightly different than the opening post, but below is the report from Professor Hans-Dieter Betz in regards to this event:

This is precisely what is wrong with Internet research. The Journal of Scientific Exploration has an agenda to prove that dowsing works. That's the focus of the Society for Scientific Exploration (SSE) and the study it refers to is not able to be found anywhere except in that article. Go ahead. Search for it on the University of Munich site. Look for the researcher's name.

Nobody, anywhere can produce a copy of the study. All you have is fervent believers in dowsing citing the same study or each other while the skeptics tear it down based on the same lack of proof. It's like watching a water balloon explode on the cement. Nobody can produce the water balloon but everyone can see the puddle.

As near as I can tell, there never was such a study. There has only been several rumors about such a study. A study as important as that one should have a verifiable source and this one does not appear to have one. Sorry.

I'll qualify my comments here by saying that I truly wish that dowsing worked and that such a study had been actually done. With 500 dowsers participating (according to several unconfirmed sources) at least one of them should remember it. The search for that many dowsers should at least be traceable but that tiny tidbit also fails to find itself in proof.

I agree. Not a serious study, at all.

That would probably be why nobody takes that particular "study" seriously.   Idiot

It is easy to see how and why it gets blown way out of proportion, as in the OP

It's almost amusing how one person reports it and the rest blindly quote it as if it is absolute fact without bothering to verify anything. Seems the alleged scientist who allegedly studied the dowsers may not even exist. Looks as if they may have borrowed the name from a doctor of theology with the same name.

Only yesterday I posted this site;

Wiki Dowsing
(a common believable site)
to show that dowsing has never been proven a reliable source.
It's funny how people through the centuries can supposedly use dowsing to find a good water source (which a geologist friend told me that in most places water can be found within 400 feet)
And dowsers are also capable of finding oil and gold caches but finding a single coin that is within 3 cms from the surface is beyond their capabilities. I don't get it. If it were true I could throw away my Garret and use a stick instead.
Just a thought,
kd
