Go Up Go Down

This legend or tall tale was first told by Bob Ward in his book "Ripples of Lost Echos"
It is a fact that De Grazia was a part time treasure hunter with an interest in the Superstitions and the Dutchman. It is also a fact that De Grazia hated the IRS and did burn some of his paintings in protest.

According to legend, 18 paintings were buried in the mountains by the artist Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia, shortly after he infamously burned 100 paintings in protest of the IRS in 1976.

The claim of the buried paintings was made publicly in 1990 by a man named Bob Ward. According to Ward, he was a close friend of De Grazia and accompanied him to the mountains. He said that each painting was rolled and placed in a watertight tube with both ends sealed. The tubes were bundled groups of three, then buried in six separate spots within the same area. Ward’s encoded map surfaced on various websites over the years, which might lead to these paintings valued at a million dollars apiece.

Some, however, say that Ward was never a close friend of DeGrazia’s and that he simply sought to profit from the creation of a tall tale to sell a book. A couple of others have surfaced to say that the legend is real, but provide differing details than Ward’s.

There are plenty of areas around where DeGrazia lived where he could have accomplished this.  And his homesite was remote enough that he could do it without going far or attracting a lot of attention.

This one could definitely stand some investigation.  (BTW he designed and built the building above as well as several others on the property with help from the locals)

Well according to Bob Ward he was there when the paintings were buried. He was to make a map and give it  to De Grazia wife after his death so she could use it to raise money or sell copies to treasure hunters. Ward said he would not recover it himself because of a promise made to De Grazia.

I will try to find a copy of map on the net or scan mine and post it.

If he gave the map to DeGrazia's widow after Ted died, it is possible they recovered at least some of the pictures.   The family has a pretty good little gallery going down there in the Tucson area.    I'll have to check that angle out the next time I go there.

Having spent a considerable amount of time studying DeGrazia's paintings, buildings, and assorted whimsies while seated in his courtyard I'd give the likelihood of Ward's story a HIGH probability rating.....but given what I've seen of how the DeGrazia Foundation has conserved, protected, and profited from the legacy left the family, if there were a map to hidden paintings and if the widow had it, the family would have recovered most of the paintings.

BTW, if anyone ever used treasure signs, I'd bet on DeGrazia doing it with a few of the caches just for the fun of it (and I'd also expect those to be "joke"/"gotcha" caches).

Well according to Ward he never gave the map to the wife and never told the story till he wrote about it in his book. Who knows?
