Come Sunday I will see if I can salvage the item and get it cleaned up a little. I will also get some better photographs using my Canon Eos450d instead of my phone. I will also try give a better idea of it's scale.

On one of the above photographs I include my C-Scope CS4PI stock coil and on one of the others I included a UK 2.2 litre plastic milk carton.

I did get to thinking that it may be a hinged cover of a sewage outfall pipe but there is no indication of
a sewage outfall pipe in the area.   Undecided

I also thought of that but the shape is all wrong. I thought that it was a 5L plastic container that you had there, do you think that a man could fit through the hole of that cover?

Then it could have comes off a steam ship, they had that type of hatch on the boilers. Found these on the net I was kind of hoping to find one that look'd a bit more like the one that you found but no such luck.
