I think I read somewhere it was .3mm which is around 35 awg. I have 30 awg so I  am going to go with that. The 2290 uH value is important as well as the frequency. Try to keep that in the middle of the suggested range. Remember the aluminum shielding will reduce the frequency.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

That is around 35 AWG and around 29/30 SWG. Here is a link that might help you that has charts. AWG is American Wire Gauge and SWG is Standard Wire Gauge. SWG is British or Imperial. AWG is also known as Brown and Sharpe and AWG is predominantly sold in the US. Hope this helps

I pull my wire from De Guass coils from TV's for the smaller coil like PI.  With out a caliper I'm not sure what it is.   Just go By Eye Ball. Pulled about 20 so fare and one is aluminum wire I guess 20 gage.

Not a bad guess at all. It averages about 20 to 22 gauge AWG. I found an inexpensive caliber/depth gauge at Harbor Freight for around $7.00 with dial gauge. They also have the digital type for around $5.00 or so with decimal or mm readout. It has definitely been a handy tool for me.

Thanks Homie. I guess it all depends on what your search turns up. Hope you are successful.

Well, I finally found the time to change the board around so the BC547 wasn't mirrored. (backwards) Attached is the final corrected board. I am not going to be changing it any more. If it needs fixing, please fix it and post your corrections. My long board version works fine. I will post that version when it is complete with ferrite coil and tubular housing. Thank you Saromines for the circuit.

Dust Carl

Sorry I posted the wrong drawing again. Don't have time to change it. Will repost it tomorrow. The BC557's are backwards too on this drawing

[I am not going to redraw the board with the proper orientation of the transistors. Sorry., but overwhelmed by other issues. However proper orientation is possible in two different ways. Use 2N3904 for BC547 and 2N3906 for the BC557, then the layout is correct. Alternatively you can use the original transistors just turn them around so the pins are in the right holes. Easy Peasy.

And also, the firmware does when power on, selftest checking volts + coil and surrounding, and inform about the state with different combinations of beeps (combination of short and long beeps). Especially if the coil is in specs. Also there is different firmwares (all are stable ones) depending upon configuration, how detector is build. The use of calibrate switch is also well documented, as is why author choosed 3,3 volt instead of 5v. But it's only for the original concept.
Here where also posted few different version firmwares, which has been removed by originalposter.

Thanks for the info karpiidi. I believe that the method he used to test the battery voltage was not whether it was too high, but if it was too low. That would be at the level where the PIC would not function properly. If the opposite were true, then my 5 volt version should fail to work. Well I  must say it works fine all the same. Yes, there is documentation out there on it, but it is in Russian, and when you translate it with Google, it looks like someone writing with poor English knwledge.

Board and coil finished. Going out to get hardware to make a housing. Will be made from pvc and fittings, kind of like my vibraprobe. Will post all project  files in download section when finished, and maybe a sneak photo before.
