I was wonder about this.
Lets say you are out detecting a lake which I like to do or you are in a park or woods and you come across a pistol or dig it up.my self I would bring to the police to have it checked to see if it was used in any murders or thefts.what would a persons chances of getting it back if it came back clean?
Thanks in advance

I suppose that would depend on what State your talking about.

Some States do not allow Hand Guns at all.

If that's not the case, I would demand a receipt for the Item and Make it Clear it's to come back to me.

Demand it back.

I have found several old guns in old barns, houses etc they are old they are mine forget about it. But some years ago I found a  nickle plated 357 in the surf. You could tell it had not been in the water more then a few days so I turned it in to the cops. It was linked to a string of robbery's so I never even tried to get it back.

Go Up Go Down

I found one yesterday,11/3/2012 . So I rang a friend at the local Police Station and told him I had unearthed it, following the lead that He himself had given me. Apparently it will be handed to ballistics who will run some tests on it. and as long as it doesnt come up hot, or needed as evidence in a crime investigation. there is a good chance I will get it back, but only after it has been rendered, inoperable. which is fine by me as i wasn't expecting to get it back at all.
