I recently was told that when my father was a teen he and his friends found a small cache of guns.  two pistols and two rifles that appeared to be the same.  he said they were rusted beyond repaire but the pistols appeared to have pearl handles..  his mother insisted they give them to the police.. so they did and that was the last they ever heard of them..  any ideas on how to find record of them or are they gone forever..  fye this happened in the 60s

Hello Coincounter,
Very interesting post you have there, Well first off any firearm turned into the police is checked to see if there is a crime attached to it, and if not the weapon is usally
held from anywhere from 30-90 days before it is destroyed. Second you said your dad had this as a teen. Well lets examine this for a brief moment, depending on what year this was
many police officers have kept firearms that have been recovered ( back in the good old days) Once it was determined that it was not involved in a crime. Now days if a firearm is turned into the authorties the only person that can claim it is the registered owner. Unless you have a bill of sale from that owner. So as far as the firearms in question I would chalk it
up that they are long gone. I would ask those in your family however, if it was ever disclosed where these guns were found. And if by some chance someone has a vauge idea where they were found I would start checking around that area providing that modern progress hasn't taken over the place. I hope this helps somewhat. Best Wishes....Rob

thanks for the post rob  the area is still very rural and the area is still wooded..  thats why i am excited about gaining permission.  ive come to the same conclussion that the guns are long gone even if a policeman claimed them that was still 40 yrs ago and without a serial number would be hard to trace

Hi coincounter,
I would by all means start checking the area, and you dont nessarily need the serial number. one way to check is get the month and the year and who it was who called the police, Since it is recovered property and turned over to the police there has to be a report made on all turned in firarms. Now since its 40 some years ago there may not be a report, But you could check if you have the information of at least the year the month and person who turned them in. Let me know how it comes out if you decided to run a check
Best Wishes....Rob

Just a quick FYI.....NEVER buy a high dollar firearm for a carry gun. If you ever have to use it or even brandish it, it will go into police lock up. Once there, the fate of the firearm is entirely uncertain. It could be returned to you, destroyed or "lost" (end up in the private collection of one of the officers or a relative/friend) If it is a less expensive model, you have a better chance of getting it back. Yes, this was relayed to me by my neighbor that's a cop and confirmed by some of my LEO friends.

Hello TxMike,
That may very well be true in some areas of the country still today, lets face it
there are some cops that will break the law. And if they take a firearm that is dose not belong to them, weather its being held in evedence or for safe keeping they have no right to it and if they are caught they will be prosocuted! and if this happens to anyone I would suggest contacting the District Attorney or even better yet Internal Affairs Division of the agency involved. And yes they will get to the botton of it and you will see how fast the weapon reappears! So I wound not hesitate to own and carry an expensive firearm( as I do) for keep in mind one thing if you ever need that weapon to protect yourself or a loved one you dont want some saturday night special that one may malfunction or cause injury to yourself instead of trying to stop the immeadate threat that one may face Best Wishes ,,,,Rob
