Hello,

I'm wondering about this well regarded discontinued detector and it's various sub models, and would appreciate any advice or help with the models, and any advice on adjustment settings for general land use & Beach or wet sand use?

Thanks in advance & appreciate your replies-  Great
Jim

Hi Jim,

I used the 1266 for over 10 years and made a lot of nice finds with it. I bought an F75 about two years ago and really haven't used it since but still have it for a backup just in case.

I'll leave you a link to some info that worked great for me, and though it's a little dated, the info is still relative.

Thanks Mike,

Feel free to send me an email or PM here and give me any advice as to sounds, and variations on sounds with this unit.  I'm all ears man & will listen to what you can tell me.

Also, can the 1266X be used on Salt water Ocean beaches?
I've read yes it's a good beach machine by a few writers, and read that it doesn't preform too good on the beach. (So, you can see my wondering about that)

I'm looking at a nice condition 1266XB for $80.00 plus $20.00 shipping, and feel it's a steal at that reasonable price?....

Thanks & appreciated,  Great
Jim

Hey Jim,

Sorry bud but I can't help you much in the wet salt sand dept as I live in the Midwest. I've never heard any rave reviews about the 1266 for those conditions either, but again, hunting the wet salt beaches isn't something I researched because of my location. I know however, that there are a lot of other detectors out there that are more suited to the task.

All of my hunting has been inland for coins and in that department the 1266 did a helluva job for a long time. It's only a single tone machine, but after you use it enough you'll find out otherwise. When you hit a deep silver, that single tone turns from a sharp tone into a much softer, sweeter tone, almost like a musical note.

Shallow iron usually has a bit of a crackle to it so it's an easy target to ID, but you'll probably get fooled by
the deeper iron because it sounds pretty close to silver. Normally you'll be able to tell it's iron or an unwanted target just by pinpointing to determine the size.

Pulltabs will have a short, clipped sound, and after you dig a mess of them you'll remember what the 1266 is telling you. Again, you'll get fooled by the deep tabs that have been folded in half or wadded up foil, but that happens with newer detectors as well.

As far as settings go, check out the second post from the bottom on the Fisher tips page. He explains it a lot better than me and using those settings really helped my nickel and gold jewelry finds.

I kept up with guys using newer machines with VDI and multi-tones because of the amount of time I spent with it. I switched because I'm getting up there age wise and have some hearing issues with tinnitus and the F75 is a pleasure to use because of it's light weight, etc...

Keep in mind, it's a deep seeking detector and I've never had any falsing issues with it. When it says there's a target down there, there is. Sometimes it'll turn out to be a big old rusty patch of dirt left by a piece of iron long gone, but sometimes it'll be a nice piece of silver or a cool relic.

That's a great deal you've found for 80.00 and I hope you have fun learning it.

Take Care
Mike

Wow that was a tremendous help Mike!

I appreciate that information as every bit counts and I soaked this up & took some notes. I'll pay special
attention to that review section you gave me and study it well. (I liked that musical note analogy)  Smiley

Understood about the beach use, I'll have to just give her a workout there & see just how she likes the Surf, as opposed to the Turf.

Mike, your willingness to reply is duly noted & very appreciate!

Cheers & have a good week, and may you have many great hours spent this year detecting with some good friends and have them turn into great times...

 Great
Jimmy

No problem Jim!

Wish you the best with it and if you've got any questions after you start using it PM me or reply to this thread and I'll try to help you out.

If you can find any of the small coils at a good price definitely pick them up. I'm not sure of the areas that you like to hunt, but pickins are getting slim and those small coils can help you find the keepers that are tucked between the pulltabs, nails and bottle caps.

Have a good time!
Mike
