Go Up Go Down

Took my GM II and my Gold Bug II out today. Set my friend up on the White's and I proceded to get going with my fisher. Turned it on, set the threshold, and proceded ground balance it... no need, it was already dead on balanced... I said to myself, "Self, what are the chances of not having to ground balance?". So I decided to test it with my .25 gram nugget... nothing. That nugget made the GM II sing, so the Gold Bug should have picked it right up. I tried some different targets: small piece of foil (no signal), rock pick (no signal), pick-up truck (sounded like a small nugget should). Okay, so does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking that it is probably in the coil, but what do I know? I am no electronics expert.

Cheers

Sean

Check your battery terminals. If you have a battery holder, check it for cracks. Check the batteries, too.

1. Is the Coil connector secure?

2. Batteries Good?

3. If you have another Coil , Swap them Out!

Huh?Huh?Huh? Wise

Batteries- check
Swap coil- no extra coil
Check coil connection- ...

I gave it a wiggle and it worked for a second. Quit working after I moved it again. Checked the wiring on the male end of the plug and all looked good. Plugged it back in and still couldn't get it to work. I think it is the wiring at the female end that resides in the control box. I think I will take her apart and look her over real good.

Thanks

Sean

Alright everything in there is good. I found the connection at the coil is without a doubt the bad one. It mus have gotten moved just barely enough to make it work while I was messing with the other connection. It is definitely the coil.

OK. Now that this is the known cause, there is a solution for you but it's not easy and not for the faint of heart.

The coil has to be violated but you really have nothing to lose. It doesn't work now so that means you can't really do it too much harm. Before I go any further, could you take a photo of the coil where the wire goes in? I can give you better advice then.

Okay GD, I can't find my camera charger anywhere! It is driving me crazy... on top of that my usb cord for my phone is MIA too. So, I found a picture online. Hope this will be good enough.

Cheers

Sean

OK, I warned you that this would not be easy.

You will need a nice, sharp bladed X-Acto knife or scalpel. Peel back the rubber cover to where the coil wire goes into the coil. You might have to carefully cut around the bottom to do that. Be sure not to cut the wires inside, just the outer rubber cover.

Then, using the blade, dig carefully into the potting compound of the coil and remove at least enough to expose a half inch or so of wire. Gently pull the wires one at a time and see which one (or more) stretches just a bit. That's the one that needs the work. Using a piece of solid copper wire, like from a scrap of CAT5 cable, build a bridge across the open wire after you remove the insulation from the one that is broken. Carefully solder the bit of wire in place. If you have two of them broken, you will need to tape the bare wire afterwards but do all wires that are broken.

Next, using RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) rubber compound, cover the wires again and replace the rubber boot over the wires. Give it about 12 hours to set, then run out and play.

I told you this wasn't for the faint of heart. The reason I wanted the picture is because those with a solid cap need to have the cap crushed by a pair of pliers and then rebuilt from a plastic bottle cap. Now THAT'S a hard repair. Yours will be a relative cakewalk. If you care worried about doing that, take it to a repair tech and get them to do it. Experience does help in this matter and someone who does a lot of wire repair can do a great job of it.

I demolished my coil. Pretty cool looking... little pieces of plastic all over the place. I'm gonna go have a cigarette and then smash the SOB and then light it on fire.

This is fun

Sean
