Hey Golddigger, I don't know what "Peace River" you are talking about. The one in Florida never has ice in it. Lettuce Lake is not a lake but a wide spot in the river. It is not a park and anyone can get in the water there.

It's not a park, just a County boat ramp.

Has anyone heard about the four 3"x8" metal plates that were dug up here around 1903? I wonder what happened to them? I would really like to see them!

salvor6;
The Peace River, of which I spake, is in Northern BC, and is called the Peace for the translation of the native name, 'Unchaga,' which means 'where the peace was made,' that is, the peace between Cree and Beaver natives. It should have been Unchagika, because -ka denotes river, in Dene.

I suspect it has been the Peace River, far longer than the one in Florida, but I may be wrong. It has been for probably 210 years and more, in English and more in the native form.

It used to freeze over but now, two large dams heat the water (1 degree per 100 ft fall X 600 feet = 6 degrees,) and now it does not freeze until somewhere over the Alberta border. Yes, ICE in Florida might be strange, but I bet Florida had it 18,000 yrs ago.

I have noticed the human propensity for naming places, the same, the world over, quite independently, on one hand, and on the other, because the namer needed, for sentimental reasons, to be reminded of somewhere far away.

There were hundreds of placer miners, on this Peace River, in the depression 30's, with rockers, sluices and pans, and one large operation at Branham Flats, the Mahaffey mine, which is now under 600 feet of water.

Lettuce Lake is a park. Here is proof.

I took my kayak down there Sunday checking the area out. Didn't make it to the place I wanted to go because of the current. I'll have to go back with a power boat.

Thanks for the update. I hear the channels that makeup Lettuce Lake are mostly overgrown making power difficult?
Good luck

Dumb Question From A Newbie: Is there a picture or sketch online of the actual Gonzales copper chart? I've been working off the cartoon, & it's hard to feel like a pro when you're staring at a cartoon laughing at you.

Is anyone willing to share a hunch about possible locations of the Gonzales cabin on Shell Creek?
The locals may/may not know based on who you ask.

I have never seen a real picture of the actual Gonzales copper chart and I have researched this treasure on and off for 20 years. It is supposed to be in some museum in Miami but I can't find it.
