Yeah, you're right...it was off the subject...so I split it into it's own topic and moved it to an appropriate board.

This thread kinda got started by accident as I was making loose conversation.

I'm sure that I can do some good searches here and get more info but now that it is here anyone with any hands on detecting beach area's or advice around Daytona Beach would be appreciated.

Thanks,

JP

Find out where the old resorts were.....lot's of people look in the area around new resorts, but if you can find a patch where the hotel isn't anymore you can often find some overlooked gems from days gone by (I tried that in the Saratoga area the last time I was there.)

May I presume you meant Sarasota?

miller66, welcome to Florida!!!....If you come. You can MD all winter long but its hot in the summer beach detecting will take it out of you when its hot. I'm not a beach detector but from members of my club that are I would say the best places are beaches that have expensive resorts on them. The problem is getting access to them. Most of them are private property or at least they treat the beaches like private property.....  If you have to walk 6 miles and climb over 12 breakwaters to get to a beach its not worth it. A few months ago a diamond studded gold cross and chain was found behind one of them on the St Petersburg Coast. I don't know exactally where but the cross and chain were appraised at $24000. the same time two diamond rings were brought in. I believe one was appraised at around $10,000. When you get on these beaches (and Miami Beach too) you will see well tanned people wearing every type of gold jewelery. Especially South Americans. They love to show off their gold on well tanned skin.  I was told the secret is to "get the bling, bling that the waves strip off before it sinks in the sand". Show up at low tide and detect in about a foot of water.  I've been to Fort. Desoto park several times with no success because I was using an ACE 250 which has a penetration depth of about 1" in salt water and 2" on salt sand, and also because it is a public beach where the middle class goes. You have to go where the treasue is to find treasure. Be sure to get a salt water machine before going to the beach. Read up on beach geomorphology and longshore drift before you come. Good Luck. gambol

Thanks for the good advice.

Probably go with an excaliber 2 and I'm thinking a Sd 22oov2 ?

Lots of research to do if I head that way.

Was the cross and chain and rings found by club members?

What is the name of your club?

Thanks again

Karl and GD are both correct......I did mean Sarasota (don't type fast late at night especially when your mind is elsewhere) and yes there is a Saratoga in Florida (but not that has beach front property) as well as several resorts with Saratoga in the name.   Either way, the principle still holds.
