I ran into some inspectors checking water quality at Panama City Beach, Florida. They said they take weekly readings there after the BP oil spill. They showed me some of the tar balls washing up on shore. The bottle caps and coins where so heavily coated with the tar they would not ring out a signal in all metal mode. Even when flipped over from side to side no reading. While you could tell they where coated bottle caps? What does that mean for detecting other finds there?

MM I have been hunting the Gulf for 40 years and have found 1000's of coins and rings coated in tar not sure why yours are not showing up on your detector. Maybe Eugene GD or Homefire can give us a technical answer.

Not sure why I got no reading either. It was only on some of the items I got no reading. I was using a Ace 250 in all metal mode. But like I said you could see the bottle caps. I thought it strange also. I had a good weeks finds other than that. See new finds post. Panama city beach May 2011.

Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like your detector is not set right or is Not working.

Tar would not stop it from detecting them.   Cool

Question for Homefire, GD, Eugene, AU, etc,......

Is it possible that something similar to the coating applied to stealth aircraft to limit electronic reflectivity is occurring?    In other words, with all the chemicals, (naturally occurring and added) is it possible that the tar has enough small metallic pieces in it that it is scattering the radio waves in all directions rather than bouncing them back to the coil.....effectively reducing the radio signature below MM's threshold setting?  (yeah, I know HIGHLY unlikely, but.....)

      I found this at

"It also helps to be dressed in black. Stealth planes are coated with radar-absorbent materials—substances with high absorbency of light at radio frequencies. One such coating is iron ball paint, which contains microscopic iron spheres that resonate in tune with incoming radio waves and dissipate the majority of their energy as heat, leaving little to bounce back to detectors."

Not sure why I got no signal but that was the only case which it happened.
Did find 2 Diamond rings and 1 silver ring + a necklace + coins, on that weeks trip to Panama city beach. So something was tuned correctly.

Different concept.

They use Microwave  (RADAR) Defussion and Obsorbsion .  Not the same stuff.
