Hello Frank,

I also enjoy looking for Mushrooms but they only grow during autumn in Germany. However then there are plenty to be found.

Good luck when looking for the Mushrooms!

Best wishes,

Christian

I do - I think I hunt for about everything. Thunderstorms and lightning here this weekend. How do you determine when they should be up? I'm planning on going up to my fav place in country next weekend. Sue

Hello Sue and Christian.I pick and eat 9 different kinds of wild mushrooms. I am of Hungarian,Slovak and German heritage and it's something we always did since we were little kids.Sue, I pick 3 types of the Morel mushrooms, in different locations throughout their growing season.( typically from early April until late in May)They are late this year.I haven't picked any yet ,and I picked my first one on April 1st last year. Here in central Pa., we have lots of mountains and valleys with their own microclimates. So sometimes I'll find the Early morels(black ones)in one area ,but not in another until 2 or 3 weeks later. I mainly determine it's time to go lookin for morels by the amount, and size of the leaves on certain trees. I also judge if the time is right by the height of certain plants and grasses in different areas. To complicate things even more rainfall is a factor, and I firmly believe you need 2 or 3 nights in a row with temps no less than in the mid 40's.Hope this helps. Smiley Frank T.

Too right Mushrooms can be treasure!
I used to work with a guy who really knew everything there was to know about them.
He used to go out collecting particularly rare varieties at the weekends.
It wasn't unusual for him to get maybe ?500 in a weekend selling them to some of the top London restuarants!  Shocked

I love to hunt for Morel Mushrooms.  Last year, I found Half-Morels or Mule tails.  I thought that they were just as good as Morels.  But I would have to agree that Morels beat them just a bit better.  I plan to look this weekend to see if they've came up.

Hello Everyone. I went for a 3 hour hike up a steep ravine and found only 2 earlybird black morels. It was a gorgeous morning for a walk and on my travels I saw 2 ruffed grouse,a wild turkey, and some squirrels. The gnats got a bit nasty after the sun warmed things up,and I only managed to get a half dozen or so ticks on(not in) me today, which is good for this neck of the woods.I heard a woodpecker jackhammering some lunch out of a tree,as I was leaving the woods. On my ride out the dirt road that leads to the main road I stopped at a spot where some slobs dumped a pile of beer cans down a small bank.I gathered them up in a garbage bag and added them to my pile at home.Rain and warm temps are forcast here for the next three days,so this coming weekend should be the start of prime time for the morel season here in my part of Pa. Sounds like you had a good morning in the woods with the creatures & now have an insight into the morel's season for this year. Ticks - I'll have to remember to take spray with me next weekend. Congrats on the 2 that you did find. Sue
